Volume 7, Issue 2 February 2010
As WAO president, I'm pleased to introduce all members of the WAO Board, which is made up of representatives from throughout the world, as mandated by the WAO Constitution. The five major areas represented include Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East/Africa, North America, and Latin America. Each Board member has important responsibilities in WAO's "Division of Labor," necessary due to its tremendous growth and success. A functioning organizational scheme enables the WAO to move forward on many different projects simultaneously. Please visit the WAO website for the names of Board Members who are Chairs or Vice-Chairs of WAO Committees and Councils.
The Executive Committee of the Board (President, President-Elect, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and Past-President) will meet during the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology meeting in New Orleans, February 25-26, 2010. A 4-hour "retreat" on the first day will identify new initiatives to be addressed by the entire Board when it meets on June 4, 2010, in London at the European Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology meeting.
New initiatives underway since the beginning of 2010 include appointing international experts on small airways diseases to the Steering Committee of a Working Group in order to begin to highlight the importance of small airways lung disease in asthma. This initiative will be chaired by Dr. Richard Martin, with Dr. Thomas Casale as Vice Chair. A second initiative is a project on "allergic rhinitis and asthma", chaired by Dr. Hae-Sim Park, and Vice Chair is Dr. Michael Blaiss. Another initiative new to WAO is scheduled for December 2010 in Dubai, UAE: the first WAO International Scientific Conference, which will be focused on asthma and co-morbid conditions.
In 2011, WAO will celebrate its 60th anniversary; 2011 is also when WAO will host its 22nd World Allergy Congress (WAC) in Cancún, México. It is my pleasure to work with Dr. Noel Rodríguez Perez, Co-Chair of the Congress Organizing Committee, and Dr. Thomas Casale, Vice Chair of the Steering Committee-Scientific Program Committee, in arranging this meeting scheduled for December 4 - 8, 2011. "Bookend" meetings will be held the first and the final days of the conference. The Scientific Program Committee and the Congress Organizing Committee include some of the very best representatives with great knowledge of how to make this WAC a tremendous success. More information is available at the website: http://www.worldallergy.org/wac2011/.
Please place the following dates on your calendar so you can attend: the WAO International Scientific Conference on "Asthma and Comorbid Conditions" in Dubai, December 5 - 8, 2010 and the World Allergy Congress in Cancún, México, December 4 - 8, 2011.
With warm regards,
Richard F. Lockey, M.D.
