Many WAO leaders and members have just returned from attending the annual scientific meeting of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), held in Istanbul, Turkey from 11-15 June. Thanks to the great work of WAO leaders and members, WAO had a strong presence in the scientific program of the Congress, participated in the exhibition with two booths, and held several successful business meetings. WAO Sessions Held at EAACI 2011, Istanbul
The 30th Annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) was held in Istanbul, Turkey, 11-15 June 2011, where the excellent scientific program and exciting venue attracted a record number of delegates. Congratulations to all concerned on the excellent Congress, and special thanks to EAACI for hosting the WAO sessions. The World Allergy Forum (WAF), and the session presented by the WAO Small Airways Working Group, were extremely popular and attendance and participation at the WAO Member Society Forum was outstanding.

The Small Airways Symposium, “Why are Small Airways Important to Asthma?” was presented on 12 June, attended by nearly 250 delegates. WAO Member Society Forum – Read about the Many Exciting Announcements!
As per tradition, the EAACI Congress was the venue for a WAO Member Society Forum, and WAO was delighted to welcome representatives from more than 25 Member Societies from around the world. WAO President, Richard Lockey, welcoming and thanking those present, explained that the Forum provides the opportunity for WAO’s Executive Committee and Board members to meet member society representatives, learn about the activities and needs of Member Societies, update them on WAO’s programs, and solicit ideas and comments from the membership. The US GLORIA Program is accepting applications for 1 more placement on Angioedema in 2011-2012!
The WAO GLORIA module on Angioedema has been recently updated and offers exciting insights into new treatments. Regional, state and local allergy societies in the US are invited to submit applications. Accepted placements have already been scheduled for the Broward Palm Beach Allergy Society (fall 2011), the Alabama Society of Allergy and Immunology (summer 2012), and the Florida Allergy Asthma Immunology Society (summer 2012).

Obituary: It is with fond rememberance and sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of Dr. Freddie Hargreave, President of St. Joseph’s Healthcare. Many of us in the field of allergy/immunology and other disciplines know him as a leader in respiratory medicine who greatly impacted the quality of patient care around the world.
