Junior Member News - December 2013
The 1st WAO Symposium on Immunotherapy and Biologics concluded successfully in Chicago, IL, United States on 14 December 2013.
The Co-Chairs of the WAO Symposium Prof. Ruby Pawankar, MD, PhD, FRCP, FAAAAI, President, World Allergy Organization and Prof. Lanny J. Rosenwasser, President-Elect, World Allergy Organization assembled world-class list of experts and the symposium was a resounding success. More than 390 attendees from 43 countries gathered for the first WAO Symposium on Immunotherapy and Biologics. A faculty of 40 internationally recognized experts reported on recent therapeutic advances and future research.

JMG Presentation Well-Received
Two members of the WAO Junior Members Group (JMG) had presentations during the symposium as part of the WAO Junior Member Session Practical Course on Immunotherapy:
Current Status and Future Perspectives of Immunotherapy in Latin America and Cuba | Alexander Diaz Rodriguez (Cuba)
Use of New Technology to Improve Utilization and Adherence to Immunotherapy | Ves Dimov (United States)
We would like to express our gratitude to Chairpersons Michael Blaiss (US) and Ignacio J. Ansotegui (Spain). The presentations were very well-received, and Alexander and I answered many excellent questions from the audience during the Q&A session. Prof. Ansotegui has always been very supportive of WAO JMG and we all truly appreciate his guidance and feedback. Prof. Blaiss is not only a world-class allergy expert but also a Twitter superstar and I would encourage you to follow him at @wheezeMD.
Follow the news and participate, on Twitter
Kudos to the WAO staff for featuring the Twitter stream from the 1st WAO Symposium on Immunotherapy and Biologics in real time, outside the conference room on a big screen TV. The news from the symposium was spread instantly around the world on Twitter via the hashtag #WAO2013. You can check all the updates here, helpfully collected on Storify by the WAO staff, and especially Samantha Machart.
Twitter is a Powerful Distribution Channel. Twitter not only offers a time efficient way to stay up-to-date but it is also a powerful distribution channel.
Here is my challenge for you:
Let’s select 10 allergists or fellows-in-training who will post updates from different scientific sessions during the next allergy scientific meeting – AAAAI, EAACI, ACAAI or WISC.
If 10 members post 10 tweets, the resulting 100 tweets, labeled with a hashtag (for example, #AAAAI), will have a far reaching impact.
Social media is fast becoming the dominant way of information consumption and sharing for patients. To quote John Noseworthy, M.D., the CEO of the Mayo Clinic: "The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered. Social media makes the union of forces more broadly practical than at any time in human history."
WAO Web TV Scientific Interviews with Experts
The new WAO initiative Scientific Interviews with Experts (part of WAO Web TV) received a great boost during the symposium by adding more interviews with experts:
Dupilumab in Asthma with Elevated Eosinophils - Interview with Sally Wenzel
Hypersensitivity reactions to non beta-lactam antimicrobial agents - Prof. Sanchez-Borges
IL 13, IL 33, Lebrikizumab and Asthma - Interview with Robert Townley
I would encourage all JMG members to sign up for WAO Web TV Scientific Interviews with Experts. The interviews can be conducted online via Google Hangouts, or in person, during the upcoming allergy/immunology meetings. The videos are 5-minute long, reference a recent journal article, and aim to answer 4 simple questions:
1. Can you please describe the main findings of the study?
2. How will this study affect patients in the future?
3. What is the take home message from this study for allergists and primary care physicians?
4. What areas of future research do you see as most promising?
WAO staff member Amanda Hegg was very helpful in arranging the interviews during the symposium. She has assembled a wonderful guide how to conduct the interviews on Google Hangouts which is provided to JGM members in advance.
In the first episode of WAO Web TV Scientific Interviews with Experts, Dr. Matteo Bonini was interviewed by Dr. Silvia Sanchez Garcia (co-chairs of the WAO JMG)
I would like to thank the WAO staff and the stellar faculty for their unwavering support, and all juniors who made possible such a successful symposium! Specially thanks to Prof. Ruby Pawankar and Prof. Lanny J. Rosenwasser.
Looking forward to seeing you all again during the future meetings,
Ves Dimov, M.D.
