Junior Member News - March 2014
The 2014 annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) concluded successfully in San Diego, CA, United States on March 4th, 2014. For those who were unable to attend, the AAAAI offers a DVD of Virtual Annual Meetings for purchase at http://annualmeeting.aaaai.org/virtual. You can see many of the updates from the meeting on Twitter, posted by your allergy/immunology colleagues with the hashtag #AAAAI: https://twitter.com/search?q=%23AAAAI&src=hash&f=realtime
Unusually for San Diego, the weather was cloudy and rainy until the last two days of the meeting. However, the scientific activity was as vibrant as always, and the AAAAI was highly successful in completing another fruitful meeting enriched with exciting research announcements and stellar presentations by world-class faculty, many of them WAO members. I was honored to present several AAAAI talks and workshops focused on technology, medical education and social media for allergists and patients. The WAO TV filmed over 20 interviews with AAAAI attendees which will be published over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
WAO Junior Member Group (JMG) looks into the future and towards WISC 2014
The WAO JMG group conducted a business meeting during 2014 AAAAI meeting in San Diego.
Prof. Ansotegui discussed the Practical Courses proposed for the WAO International Scientific Conference (WISC) 2014. These courses were previously presented at an EAACI meeting and were very popular. He suggested the Practical Courses could be anywhere from 20-45 minutes. Each would be led by a Junior Member with a Senior Member of the WAO as the supervisor of the session. The WAO JMG members and their respective supervisor will, together, develop the curriculum, including slides and handouts.
The staff of the WAO thanked the outgoing, founding chair and co-chair of the JMG group, Silvia Sanchez-Garcia and Matteo Bonini, for their outstanding service. A formal appreciation for them is planned during WISC 2014. The new chair and co-chair of the JMG group are Luciana Kase-Tanno and Ves Dimov who will work closely with the WAO staff on the upcoming WISC in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 6-9 December 2014. The term of service is 2 years. The new chairs will continue to foster close collaboration between Junior Members to ensure JMG’s continuous success in the future.
The WAO TV filmed another set of great interviews with some of the world’s top allergy/immunology experts. Expect the interviews to appear over the next few weeks at http://www.worldallergy.org/members/wao_tv and to be announced on the Twitter account @worldallergy and my personal account @allergy
I would encourage all JMG members to sign up for WAO TV Scientific Interviews with Experts. The interviews can be conducted online via Google Hangouts, or in person, during the upcoming allergy/immunology meetings. The videos are 5-minute long, reference a recent journal article, and aim to answer 4 simple questions:
1. What are the main findings of the study?
2. How will this study affect patients in the future?
3. What is the take home message from this study for allergists and primary care physicians?
4. Where is this type of research heading in the future?
I look forward to seeing you all again during the future meetings,
Ves Dimov, M.D.
