Claus Bachert, MD, PhD
Claus Bachert currently serves as Professor and Head of Clinics of the Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, and received a long-term scientific mandate to chair the Upper Airway Research Laboratory at the University of Ghent. Prof. Bachert also holds the position of Vice President of the German Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and serves on the Board of Directors for the World Allergy Organization. He is a member of the World Health Organization Initiative on Allergy Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA), the European Position Paper on Polyps and Sinusitis (EPOS), and is currently participating in two scientific projects (Predicta and MedALL) for the European Research Program.
Prof. Bachert studied human medicine in Heidelberg, Germany, and is a specialist in ENT and Allergy. Professor Bachert's research interests include understanding the pathomechanisms of airway inflammation; including allergic rhinitis, nasal polyposis and chronic rhinosinusitis. He has published more than 240 international papers and 50 book chapters; with a focus on Staphylococcus aureus superantigens, interleukin-5, T-cell regulation, tissue remodeling and disease phenotypes. His clinical expertise in rhinology includes endoscopic sinus surgery, tumor and scull base surgery. He also organizes an International Yearly Course on Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.
