Southampton Allergy Centre – A WAO Center of Excellence

Our mission is to provide excellence in clinical care, research for patient benefit and education for all.

Southampton has an international reputation for scientific and patient based research in Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology. They have expertise in the clinical trials, epidemiology, diagnostic laboratory and scientific basis of food, drug, skin, eye, airway and paediatric allergies and have established cross disciplinary research programmes that examine Life Course immunity. The three key physicians in the leading roles are Prof. Hasan Arshad (Research lead), Dr. Anthony Williams (Clinical lead) and Dr. Judith Holloway (Education lead). However, the department boasts a number of world leading physicians and scientists in allergy including Professors Stephen Holgate, Peter Howarth, Graham Roberts and John Holloway. The areas of active research interest include Asthma mechanisms (Prof S. Holgate), Birth cohorts & Allergy Prevention (Prof H. Arshad), Severe Asthma and Novel Treatments (Prof P. Howarth & Dr R. Kurukulaaratchy), Adolescent Asthma and Food Allergy (Prof G. Roberts & Dr J. Lucas), Allergic Rhinitis (Dr R. Salib), Allergy Genetics & Epigenetics (Prof J. Holloway), Airway Inflammation (Prof R. Djukanovic), Mucosal immunity (Prof D. Davies), Adaptive Immunity (Dr A. Williams), Mast cell biology (Dr A. Walls), Eczema and T cell biology (Dr M. Arden-Jones), Food Allergy prevalence (Dr C. Venter) and Egg Allergy (Dr M. Lajeunesse).

The Southampton Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (AA&CI) service is a regional Comprehensive Care Centre for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected allergic diseases, difficult asthma and immunodeficiency disorders. This service is Consultant led, delivering an integrated program of care that encompasses both paediatric and adult provision, sharing a common ethos to deliver excellence in clinical care, education and research on behalf of the patient population. The Consultant team consists of 6 adult and 5 Paediatric physicians.

All members of the Consultant team, plus those in dietetics and nursing, are actively involved in both teaching and research. The MSc Allergy programme provides a formal teaching programme at certificate, diploma, MSc or standalone module level for UK and international students (nurses, primary care doctors, speciality trainees, consultants and dieticians) that wish to improve their understanding and management of allergic disease. The module leaders for the MSc allergy programme include Dr J. Holloway & Dr J lucas (Foundations of Allergic Disease), Prof H. Arshad & Dr. C. Venter (Food Allergy), Dr. M. Arden-Jones & Dr. E. Eren (Eczema, Urticaria and Anaphylaxis). and Prof P. Howarth and Dr. R. Salib (Allergic Airways disease). Student research projects undertaken as part of their MSc, have been published in leading Allergy journals.  The department also hosts national training days for speciality trainee doctors in Allergy and Clinical Immunology (Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of Paediatrics and Royal College of Pathologists approved). Annual allergy educational days for primary care physicians and nurses are also undertaken by the adult and paediatric teams.

In line with WAO’s mission that has developed extensive educational resources, position papers, recommendations for allergy training, undergraduate curriculum materials and the WAO White book on Allergy,  the Southampton Allergy department would join hands in enhancing the knowledge in allergy and clinical immunology for  practicing physicians, fellows, patients, families and healthcare practitioners across the world.  We would like to support and add to WAO's educational and training programs via in person education as well as e-learning especially in emerging regions where access to high quality educational resources are limited and where improved education can translate into increased capacity building and improved allergy care.
