Luis Caraballo, MD, PhD
Prof. Caraballo is a Doctor in Medicine and Surgery, Magister in Immunology, Doctor in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Specialist in Clinical Allergology. Honorary Professor, Senior Professor of Medicine and Allergy and Director of the Institute for Immunological Research, University of Cartagena, Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
He is a current member of the Editorial Board of the WAO Journal. Former President of the Colombian Association of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. Current Coordinator of the Biomedical Sciences PhD Program of the University of Cartagena. For 30 years has been committed to educating undergraduate and graduate (Master and PhD) students, the latter being working now as academic or researchers in several institutions of Colombia and other countries.
He has been involved in the organization of numerous national and international meetings and congress in the field and also has been speaker in several of them in Latin America, the USA and several Europe and Asia countries. He has made and is currently doing significant contributions to the field of experimental allergy, basically studying the genetic and environmental factors for asthma in the tropics.
Prof Caraballo is an expert on mite allergens and has discovered several allergens from Blomia tropicalis. Lately he is analyzing the immunological relationships between these allergens and those from the nematode Ascaris lumbricoides to better understand the epidemiologic associations between asthma and helminth infections and to continue investigating the genetic control of the IgE response to these important tropical antigens as a model to understand more general problems such as the evolutionary links between allergy and the immune response to parasites.
