Mission Statement: Excellence in education, innovative scientific investigation, and comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare.

About the Center: The Center of Excellence in Allergy and Immunology at the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) is a leading academic and clinical hub dedicated to advancing the field of allergic and immunologic diseases in Brazil and beyond. Guided by the statement “Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Patient Care,” the Center integrates high-quality education, innovative scientific investigation, and comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare.

In the realm of teaching, the Center plays a pivotal role in the training of medical students, residents, and fellows, fostering the development of future specialists in Allergy and Immunology. Its educational programs are grounded in evidence-based medicine and emphasize critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical practice. Faculty members are actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, contributing to curriculum development and mentoring students at different stages of their academic careers. The Center also promotes continuing medical education through workshops, seminars, and national and international collaborations, ensuring that healthcare professionals remain up to date with the latest advances in the field.

Research is a core pillar of the Center’s mission. The team is engaged in high-impact clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies that address key challenges in allergy and immunology, including asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, urticaria, drug hypersensitivity, and primary immunodeficiencies. By leveraging multidisciplinary expertise and modern methodologies, the Center contributes to the generation of new knowledge that informs clinical practice and public health policies. Collaborations with national and international research networks enhance the scope and relevance of its scientific output. The Center is also committed to training young researchers, providing opportunities for students and residents to participate in research projects and develop academic careers. Patient care at the Center is characterized by a comprehensive and humanized approach. As part of a major tertiary referral hospital, the Center provides specialized outpatient and inpatient services for patients with complex allergic and immunologic conditions. Multidisciplinary teams work together to deliver accurate diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and long-term management strategies. Advanced diagnostic tools and therapies are available, including allergen-specific immunotherapy, biologic agents, and protocols for drug desensitization. The Center also plays an important role in the management of severe and rare diseases, serving as a reference unit within the public healthcare system. Importantly, the integration of teaching, research, and patient care creates a dynamic environment where knowledge is continuously translated into practice. Clinical cases inform research questions, while scientific discoveries are rapidly incorporated into patient management and educational activities. This synergy strengthens the quality of care delivered and ensures that patients benefit from the most current and effective interventions.

Through its commitment to “Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Patient Care,” the Center of Excellence in Allergy and Immunology at UFPR stands as a model of academic medicine. It not only contributes to the advancement of the specialty but also plays a crucial role in improving the health and quality of life of patients with allergic and immunologic diseases.
