Review of Activities in Latin America

The WAO Junior Members Group has focused on developing different activities in various regions of the world. These activities accomplished together with sister organizations; enhance the training and update of Junior Members worldwide.

This month we will focus on the activities that have been carried out in the last year by the groups of Junior Members of Mexico and the SLaai (Latin American Society of asthma, allergy, and immunology) in collaboration with the WAO Junior Members Group.

The group of Junior Members from Mexico (CAIJM Committee of Young Immunological Allergists of Mexico) was formed a year and a half ago during the Mexican College of Specialists in Asthma, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology (COMPEDIA) Annual Meeting, with the support of different organizations among them The WAO Junior Members Group. After the group formed, the Junior members have carried out activities that help the training and update of young faculty members or junior members in allergy and immunology.

The first event led by the Junior Members of Mexico was held in conjunction with the Junior members of the SLaai on July 23, 2018, in the City of Tijuana, Baja California Mexico, as a pre-course of the COMPEDIA annual meeting, with the title “1st School of Asthma”. This event was attended by 70 local Junior members, as well as national and international recognized speakers. The event closed with clinical case sessions given by local junior members.

In January 2019 the group held the "1st School of Allergy and Immunology", focused on senior fellows in training (FIT) from Mexico; 40 FITs attended the event. One of the event goals was to discuss issues of common interest based on the national and international Clinical Practice Guidelines, which supported allergy board preparation for the FITs.

From May 11 to 13, 2019, the XX Latin American Congress of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology was held in the city of Asunción Paraguay. In this event, the Junior Members of the SLaai together with the Paraguayan Society of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, organized the poster session during the meeting, in which more than 70 research projects carried out in Latin America were presented. During this session, there was a scientific exchange among several countries. Two abstracts received overall awards; pollination levels in the city of Asuncion and a multi-center study on anaphylaxis.

Subsequently, on May 15 during the COMPEDIA Congress in the city of Guadalajara Jalisco, the Committee of the Junior Members of the SLaai together with the Junior Members of Mexico organized the Symposium of Drug Allergy. International speakers, which included two members of the WAO Junior steering committee (Dr. Alexei Gonzalez from the Mayo Clinic and Dr. Lyda Cuervo from the University of Florida) were invited to the meeting. Dr. Gonzalez gave a lecture on Drug Provocation Tests (DPT) with emphasis on the use of these tests for the diagnosis of drug allergy. Also, Dr. Gonzalez highlighted protocols and scientific studies that support what is currently performed in clinical practice. Dr. Cuervo made a presentation of NSAID Allergy, in which she pointed out the most current classification, diagnosis, and follow-up of pediatric and adult patients with this condition.

Both speakers used clinical cases and interacted with the Junior Members who attended the session. To finish the symposium on drug allergy, four clinical cases of drug allergy were presented by FITs from several training programs in Mexico. The drug allergy symposium had an attendance of more than 200 allergists, with more than 80 local Junior Members.

Soon the Junior Members of Mexico and SLaai, will organize a Master class of biologicals for allergy that will take place in the Congress of the Mexican College of Clinical Immunology and Allergy in the city of Merida from June 19-22, 2019.

The work that is currently being done by the members of the WAO, headed by Dr. Alexei Gonzalez, and through the steering committee, which Junior Members from all over the world participate, helps to organize these scientific sessions, promote the exchange of knowledge among countries and promote the union of the guild.
