Al Rashed Allergy Center, Ministry of Health, Kuwait

History
Al-Rashed Allergy center was established in 1984 as an allergy unit, that expanded over the years to a well-established independent Allergy center It is a tertiary center that receives patients with different allergic and immunodeficiency diseases. It offers service to all Kuwait and operate during working hours and on calls services. In line with the center vision and mission to be an internationally recognized world-class center for healthcare excellence, the service provides the highest quality of care to patients with the utmost compassion through effective leadership, promotion of excellence, and ongoing education and research. Al-Rashed Allergy center has undergone enormous expansion recently. The service operates independently on its own premises, with a group of dedicated personnel. Our highly skilled team works closely with medical providers from many medical specialties, including Respiratory, ENT, dermatology, Gastroenterology, psychiatry, and others.

Facilities
The Allergy center structure is based on the following

  1. Outpatient’s clinics
    • Total of 16 clinics runs daily
    • Divided into general allergy and specialized clinics for drug allergy, severe asthma, food allergy, primary immunodeficiency, and skin allergy and urticaria clinics
  2. Day care unit: including 3 inpatients medical wards for
    • Primary immunodeficiency infusions
    • Severe asthma on biologics
    • Anaphylaxis workup
    • Drug provocation challenge, aspirin challenge and desensitization
    • Oral food challenge
  3. Specific immunotherapy ward for monitoring and titrating doses of specific subcutaneous immunotherapy for patients with allergies (sublingual therapy is available for schoolchildren population)
  4. The center also includes the following services
    • Medical Laboratory
      • Immunology Section 
      • Allergy Section
    • Radiology Department
    • Social worker department
    • Aerobiology department 
      • Pollen collection
      • Molds collection
      • Pollen calendar annual release
    • Physiotherapy department for day care patients
    • Central pharmacy and infusion services
    • Skin prick test clinic
    • Contact dermatitis Clinic for patch test
    • Pulmonary lung function laboratory: for performing Spirometry, PFT, Methacholine challenge test, exercise test, Fractional exhaled test (FENO), induced sputum tests, and nasal provocation tests
  5. Patient’s services: about 120,000 new referrals is received per year on average. A wide range of disorders are seen, including the following
    • General respiratory allergy
      • Allergic rhinitis
      • Bronchial asthma
      • Hyperreactive airway disease
      • Allergic eosinophilic airway diseases
    • Food allergy
    • Anaphylaxis
    • Drug allergy/adverse reactions
    • Angioedema, including hereditary angioedema
    • Chronic and acute urticaria cases
    • Insect sting allergy, recurrent infections
    • Autoimmune disorders
    • Primary immunodeficiency disorders 
    • Atopic dermatitis across different age group
    • Contact dermatitis

Teaching and learning

The team at Al-Rashed Allergy center consist of 20 practicing allergist, pulmonologist, and internists, with more than 45 nursing staff, 6 respiratory therapists, and 5 physiotherapists Kuwait Medical specialization (KIMS) (www.kims.org.kw) established a well-structured three-year fellowship program since 2010 with an intake of 1-2 fellows per year. The program offers excellent training, a well-structured didactic educational program, significant exposure to diverse cases, and rotations in various specialties.

The Allergy center is actively involved in patient education and collaborates with various patients’ groups. Al-Rashed Allergy center has been accredited as an Urticaria Center of Reference and Excellence (UCARE) since 2016 and Angioedema Center of Reference and Excellence (ACARE) since 2019 by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network
