The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) are collaboratively on a World Allergy Organization Center of Excellence (WCOE). CCHMC serves as the Department of Pediatrics for the UCCOM. The CCHMC/UCCOM WCOE has a multidisciplinary group; is based in academic institutions in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States of America; and encompasses 5 subspecialties: Allergy and Immunology, Asthma, Autoimmune Genomics and Etiology, Immunobiology, and Primary Immune Deficiency.

The CCHMC/UCCOM WAO Center of Excellence has the mission to advance pediatric and adult allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology as a multidisciplinary field through clinical service, research, education, networking, and advocacy.

 

Goals

  • To be a major leader in innovative basic, translational, and clinical research in allergy/immunology.
  • To translate fundamental basic research toward clinical utility in allergy/immunology.
  • To train the next generation of leaders in research and clinical practice in allergy/immunology.
  • To foster collaboration, networking, and support of advocacy in allergy/immunology

 

Subspecialties

Allergy and Immunology
The WCOE subspecialty is led by Marc E. Rothenberg, MD, PhD (Pediatrics, CCHMC/UCCOM) and Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD (Internal Medicine, UCCOM). This subspecialty has the further clinical specialties of Drug Allergy, Eosinophilic Disease, and Food Allergy.

Asthma
The WCOE is subspecialty led by Gurjit K. Khurana Hershey, MD, PhD (CCHMC/UCCOM).

Autoimmune Genomics and Etiology
The WCOE is subspecialty led by Leah C. Kottyan, PhD (CCHMC/UCCOM).

Immunobiology
The WCOE subspecialty is led by David A. Hildeman, PhD (CCHMC/UCCOM).

Primary Immune Deficiency
The WCOE subspecialty is led by Michael B. Jordan, MD (CCHMC/UCCOM). This subspecialty has the further clinical specialties in Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency and Histiocytosis.

 

Training Programs

Allergy and Immunology Clinical Fellowship
The pediatric and internal medicine Allergy and Immunology Clinical Fellowships are led by Kimberly A. Risma, MD, PD (Pediatrics, CCHMC/UCCOM) and Kristin A. Schmidlin, MD (Internal Medicine, UCCOM), respectively, and are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Allergy and Immunology Advanced Research Training Fellowship
The Allergy and Immunology Advanced Research Training Fellowship is collaboratively led by Kimberly A. Risma, MD, PD (CCHMC/UCCOM) and Marc E. Rothenberg, MD, PhD (Pediatrics, CCHMC/UCCOM).

Immunology Graduate Program
The Immunology Graduate Program is led by Ian P. Lewkowich, PhD (CCHMC/UCCOM) and has an associated National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 award.

 

Organization Overview

The CCHMC and the UCCOM are well-established organizations with excellent governance, infrastructure, and recognized mentors in allergy, asthma, and clinical immunology.
