Description: Department of Pediatric Allergy, Institute of Child Health, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi (India) is awarded with ‘Centre of Excellence’ by World Allergy Organization (WAO).

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a 675-bedded multispecialty teaching referral hospital situated at Delhi, the capital city of India. The hospital has state of art patient care facilities for all medical and surgical specialties. The hospital provides quality clinical services to patients from all across India and neighboring countries.

Allergy services at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi were started in 2015 by Dr Neeraj Gupta, a trained Allergist, Pediatric Intensivist and Sleep Specialist. Since then, the department has grown leaps and bounds in order to serve the patients suffering from different allergic disorders.

The Department of Pediatric Allergy at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is very active for patient care, education and research. The team, at Department of Pediatric Allergy, is providing quality diagnostic and therapeutic services to the needy patients from all age groups, suffering from various forms of allergies. The Pediatric Allergy lab, at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, is the country’s first well equipped center where all facilities for in-vitro (Immunocap and molecular diagnostics) and in-vivo (skin prick, patch, intradermal and challenge) testing facilities are available. Structural and functional assessment with Flexible bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, GI endoscopy, FeNO assessment, spirometry, oscillometry and polysomnography are available in the department. Multi-disciplinary team involving allergist, pediatric and adult pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, otorhinolaryngologist, ophthalmologist, geneticist, immunologist, emergency medicine and critical care specialists are available round the clock to manage any unanticipated event. In-house para-clinical support from departments of hematology, biochemistry, radiology and pathology helps in timely management. Facilities for immunotherapy, drug and food challenges and drug desensitization are available at the center. The department is considered as referral center for India and neighboring countries for different allergic disorders. Facilities for both physical and virtual consultation with the experts helps in wider coverage of healthcare in limited time. The department also runs two charity clinics per week at hospital and several medical camps at schools, colleges and community halls periodically to help patients suffering from allergy. The hospital also provides social support to the families or individuals where ever applicable.

The WAO Centre of Excellence honour is a result of successful bid, led by Dr Neeraj Gupta, on behalf of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi (India). Dr Gupta is currently working as Senior Consultant and Associate Professor at the department. He has received many accolades at various forums and has also contributed several research papers and books in the field with ‘Comprehensive Textbook of Allergy’ being his latest compilation. He is also the Program Director for Diploma in Pediatric Allergy and Asthma (DPAA).

On receiving the prestigious WAO center of excellence accolade by the institution, Dr Gupta said: “The recognition is the result of hard work and dedication by the multi-disciplinary team over past decade. Now there is an added responsibility on us to enhance research and training opportunities in the field of allergy along with delivery of best treatment to our patients.” He also added that “there is an unmet need for such centers in the country in order to improve quality clinical services. Correct identification of culprit allergens and timely management with appropriate prevention, pharmaco- and/or immuno-therapy under the guidance of experts is the key to check the increasing allergy problems”.

Dr Anil Sachdev, Pediatric Intensivist and Pulmonologist, Senior Consultant and Co-Chairman Department of Pediatrics at the hospital said: “This is a proud moment for all of us and our hospital to receive the prestigious recognition by WAO.
